WHO

WE ARE…

An urban farm in Houston blending tradition with technology

Verdegreens’ Farms was founded in 2016 and is one of the few urban farms in the greater Houston Area. Located on a small .98 acre lot in the northwest quadrant of the city, Verdegreens employs state-of-the-art technologies to maximize output while using 1/10th of the water of a traditional farm, minimizing fertilizer runoff, and using zero pesticides or herbicides. We are proud to produce a wide variety of edible greens, herbs, vegetables, and microgreens to service our clients. At Verdegreens, we believe that the future of food is local, sustainable, and delicious.

WHAT WE DO

WHAT

WE DO…

Hydroponic, traditional, and bespoke growing

Verdegreens represents a mix of cutting-edge technology and time-honored tradition…

01. HYDROPONIC.

The word “hydroponics” comes from the Greek, meaning “water” and “work.” It is the process of growing plants in non-soil media by adding nutrients directly to the water. The results speak for themselves: plants grow faster and with more regularity, as they are able to take up the nourishment they need more readily because it is dissolved into the water in which they grow. Plants are able to grow at much greater densities than would be possible in the field, and root systems, as seen above, are clean and white. And the best part? The water that flows past the plant roots is collected and recirculated. This recirculation means that hydroponic production of vegetables uses about 90% less water than traditional agriculture, which is great for our planet. At Verdegreens, we love hydro.

02. TRADITIONAL.

Some plants just grow better the old-fashioned way. That’s why, at Verdegreens, we choose to raise some of our lovely vegetable crops in soil media: mostly root vegetables like carrots, beets, and the radishes depicted here. However, we employ the most efficient techniques for increasing productivity, following organic practices in all of our efforts, and never using pesticides or herbicides.

03. BESPOKE.

As restaurant industry veterans (our partners are a chef, a restaurant owner, and a sommelier) Verdegreens knows the joys of cooking for other people. That’s why we love to work with our chef and restaurant partners to provide the specialty produce and the peak freshness they need for their operations to stand out. Tired of weeks-old salad mix from the big distributors? Give us a call. Our produce is fresh-picked daily, just a few miles from you. Can’t find that something special you’d love to put on your menu? Contact us and we’ll see if we can help.

WHEN we do it

WHEN

WE DO IT…

The short answer? 24/7, 365.

At Verdegreens, we focus on Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA), mainly growing in greenhouses and shadehouses to create the optimal conditions for our plants to thrive. Because of these methods, we are a productive farm year-round. While we are still bound by the seasons in what we grow, our methods allow us to grow longer, faster, and with greater success despite the time of year. All this means that, despite the calendar, we deliver peak freshness directly to you.

WHERE WE DO IT

WHERE

WE DO IT…

In Houston, this is as local as it gets.

Verdegreens could perhaps be best described as a peri-urban farm, located about ten minutes outside of the north loop in the historic Highland Heights neighborhood. As such, all of our products are distributed over exceptionally short distances, making our environmental footprint from trucking negligible. It also ensures that all of our greens are harvested at the peak of freshness, and not trucked in to Houston  over the course of weeks on refrigerated trucks from the Salinas Valley. If you’re looking for local food, well this is a local as it gets!
